US Road Trip Epilog: 21st August 2005

My room at the Best Western is huge and, once I've rearranged the furniture, not a bad place to wait-out the weekend before getting the car fixed on Monday. Unfortunately the room is so big that the air conditioner can't actually keep it at anything less than uncomfortably hot. At least the wired internet access works well.

Last night was the NASCAR Busch Series race from Michigan and today is the Nextel Cup race from the same place. Both very entertaining, especially as fuel economy seems to be the big issue which is almost laughable in cars that do around 5 or 6 MPG.

You may be wondering why I'm not going out looking for live music. The reason is that Memphis has a very different vibe compared to the previous times I've been here:

The reason, I think, is the current heatwave - a record-breaking one according to the local news. It's not the heat during the day so much as the fact that it doesn't cool down at night. When I go out for a walk up Beale St. around 9 p.m. a bank on the corner shows a temperature of 91° F.

The atmosphere on Beale St. is not the same as I've experienced before. It's actually a bit threatening, and I don't want anything to do with it. I think I'll just scuttle off back to my motel. Having lived in or near some fairly rough places in my time, I tend to trust my instincts on these things.
